Digital Imaging/Photo Retouching from Quadrant Photograpers

The discovery of the perfect bridge for a series of images to be used in an annual report was tainted by a gray, overcast sky. We were able to extract the original sky from the scene, removing all traces from amidst the many bare branches of the trees, and place a much more appealing sky in its stead. The reflections in the water were altered to match the sky, and unsightly power lines were also removed.

The 1998 Louisville Orchestra Classical Poster was one of our retoucher's favorite, and earliest, jobs. Quadrant photographer John Beckman photographed the properly positioned golf clubs in the studio, and the rest of the poster was created digitally. Our task was to create the background, including the musical note shadows, as well as the "glow" and hightlights on the clubs. The poster concept and text illustration at the bottom were created by Norm Adams of Baach Creative Services.

Quadrant photographed the conductors for the Louisville Orchestra for use in various promotional materials. Later, the Orchestra decided they wanted to create some life-sized cutouts of each conductor. Unfortunately, we had not done a full body shot of this conductor, and he was not available for another photo session. We photographed one of our photographers' legs wearing appropriate attire, and then put the images together, altering perspective and color to make the two images blend seamlessly.

The photo inset was from the original shoot Quadrant did for a client's brochure. After the brochure was completed, it was discovered that the wrong legs had been provided for the tables in four of the images. We were given the formidable task of replacing these legs with the correct ones digitally. Unfortunately, the new legs provided were attached to a much thinner table and, therefore, had much smaller feet. We not only had to position the new legs correctly on the tables but also had to create the portions of the feet that were missing. The images also required some minor retouching and color correction.

Sometimes a photographer has very little control in getting the shot he wants. Someone turns off the lights in a locked building, and the wind dies down just when you need those flags to be flying.

Several tasks lay in front of uson this project. The image was turned into a duotone to add to desired visual impact, then an illustration was placed on every monitor screen in the image by marrying separate photographs of the screens and overall scene. Furthermore, the client did not like the large screen on the wall intersecting with the heads of the people standing in back, so we removed the bottom portion of the screen, recreating the wall underneath in the process. And to top it all off, someone forgot to turn on the lights.

A significant portion of Quadrant's work involves photographing furniture. Frequently, these shots require the construction of an entire roomset in the studio that might mimick an office building or a household kitchen. To help add some realism to the shots, we adds an appropriate scene in the roomset's window.

The Tafel Motors Dealership in Louisville was impossible to photograph without the clutter of telephones poles and wires obstructing the view of the building. And to top it off, the sky was not cooperating. Aside from adding a more appealing sky, we had to remove telephone poles, wires and signs, reconstructing windows and walls in the process.
